Tram Museum Thielenbruch
The tram museum in Thielenbruch at the terminus of the number 18 tram takes visitors on a time journey through the history of public transport in the Cologne region. At the heart of this museum, which opened in September 1997, are more than 20 historic vehicles presented in the exhibition rooms on an area totalling more than 2,500 square metres.
In addition, the museum presents a large number of other exhibits, photographs and documents on the development of public transport in the Cologne area since 1877 as well as information on the city’s history and the history of technology. The history of Cologne's public transport system can be experienced not only through photos and route maps, but also by going on a "ride" on a compurised route simulation. Historical films from the 1950s and 60s by KVB, Cologne’s public transport operator, provide vivid tableaus of the city during that period.
The four highlights of the exhibition make Cologne’s history of public transport since 1877 come alive – the horse tramway, the first electric tram, the "Finchen" tram, which operated on the network of the Köln-Frechen-Benzelrather-Eisenbahn and the life-size model of the driver's cab of a series 2400 metro train, which is being introduced on the KVB network.
Ice skating in the heart of Cologne
Every year, arguably Germany’s finest open-air ice rink thrills skaters from all over the world.
Set amongst the magical atmosphere of the Christmas market, its more than 100-m-long straights and circumnavigation of the imposing horseman statue are a source of ice-skating enjoyment for young and old.
The rink always remains open well into January.
